Louise raises her gun. Fear shoots through me. But I don’t stop. I close my eyes and bolt for her. I don’t want to kill her. I need her alive.

I hear the click of a chamber, and then a shot.

I shuffle to a stop, expecting the bullet to have found me. But when I open my eyes, Louise is on her knees, cradling her arm. There’s blood near her shoulder. Her gun lies on the ground a couple of feet away from her. Someone must have shot her before she could shoot me.

Louise looks up at me now, and I swear she’s annoyed, like she can’t believe we had the nerve to send a bullet her way. But she also looks relieved that I’ve stopped coming at her.

Ezra comes up beside me. Gabriel moves past us, kicks Louise’s gun further away from her reach, and then grabs her hands and twists them behind her back. He pulls her to her feet smoothly. His movements are surprisingly practiced. Louise cringes, blood staining her yellow shirt where the bullet struck her.

At that moment I notice that Louise is not alone. She has a driver. And he’s raising his gun toward us.

“Look out!” I shout, leaping between Ezra and the shooter.

But as soon as I say it, Louise whips her head around. “Oh for Pete’s sake, Stiles, do you really think that’s a good idea?”

The guy hesitates, lowers his gun and drops it to the ground. One of Robert’s guys comes up behind him, and grabs his arms, cuffing his wrists.

“We’ve got to get out of here,” says Robert.

I look around. He’s right. People have turned their porch lights on. A couple brave ones are peeking around their doors and through their curtains to see what’s going on. They must have heard the gunshot.

Robert begins issuing orders and everyone finds a vehicle. I end up behind the wheel of Louise’s car with Ezra in the passenger seat and Gabriel with Louise in the rear. He has her expertly pinned into the seat. I hear her muffled groans.

“Uh, have you done that before?” I ask as I drive, surprised at his skill again.

He glances up. “I’ve taken extensive self-defense classes.”

“No kidding,” remarks Ezra.

Before I get to the main road, Robert comes over the radio, “Take the 91 freeway north.”

I search for the sign, refraining from speeding so I don’t capture the wrong attention. After a few stoplights, I find the freeway, edging into the steady but uncongested flow of traffic.

“Where’s Fowler, Louise?” I ask, breaking the silence, keeping my eyes trained on the road ahead.

“Let me go and I’ll tell you,” Louise says calmly, her voice muffled against the back seat.

It’s not like I expected her to answer my question, but asking is a good place to start. She’s as unreadable as ever though. Louise is in pain, but underneath that she’s so serene that I’d think she considers this a vacation.

“So… your life for his?” I say to her.

“No reason to complicate it,” she says easily.
